Is Minimum Viable Product(MVP) necessary for your startup?

Is Minimum Viable Product(MVP) necessary for your startup?

They all started as an MVP. A minimum viable product is a simplistic, ready-to-launch prototype that includes only the most essential features — the ones that define its value proposition. An MVP is built to shorten time to market, attract early adopters, and find product-market fit from the very start.

When the MVP is released, the first round of feedback is expected. Based on that feedback, the company keeps fixing errors and shipping the improvements its pioneers ask for.

Every startup faces the same challenge: choosing the best problem to solve and the best market to sell to — quickly and effectively. Until about a decade ago, teams did this with heavy product management and a top-down, waterfall approach. The Lean Startup methodology changed all of that.

The MVP method allows for:

An early market entry that creates a real first-mover advantage

Testing the concept with actual users to see whether the product solves their problem efficiently

The Objective of an MVP

The idea behind building an MVP is to launch a product from a pre-existing idea quickly, on a limited budget. This approach lets a company collect user feedback on the core product and fold it into future iterations. An MVP helps you find the right audience, generate ideas grounded in real experience, and save time.

Creating an MVP means striking a fair balance between what the business gives users and what users actually require. Its goal is to validate one hypothesis: that the product solves a real user problem. MVPs also reduce errors during development, and by targeting specific groups or user types they help you collect the highest quality feedback.

They also boost the rate of adaptation. Fast change is the MVP's strongest suit — it allows quick adaptation and flexibility, ensuring the product is something consumers both need and enjoy. Continuous feedback lets you keep refining, which is how you hold your customers' attention over time.

The Business Advantages of MVP Development

MVP development acts as both a sword and a shield for your application: it generates user interest while protecting your business from failure. Let's look at each benefit one by one.

1. Focus solely on the core

An MVP app focuses on a single concept and leaves everything else out. That is consistent with the lean startup ideology — build the right product, on a small budget, in a short period of time. Shipping only the few most important features keeps development cost down and lets the app be tested with very little risk.

2. An opportunity for early testing

It is far better to find out early whether the product idea works than to discover it after the entire product budget is spent.

3. User intelligence and input

The MVP tells you what potential users actually think and what they want to see in the finished product.

4. Market validation

An MVP helps a company determine whether the app fits its target market. It should communicate the brand clearly and show exactly how the product differs from competitors' offerings.

5. Easier app development

Shorter development time means lower development cost. The sooner the app reaches users, the sooner feedback arrives — so the team can improve it and release an updated version quickly.

6. Cost effectiveness

Building an MVP early in the product development process is simply less expensive. It lets businesses test their ideas before investing large sums in something that may or may not work.

Result: Lower upfront cost, faster learning, and far less risk of building something nobody wants.

Putting Business Ideas to the Test

The single biggest advantage of an MVP is that it lets organisations test their business concept. By offering a core set of features instead of a full, feature-heavy product, teams can verify whether the idea resonates with the audience they believe is theirs — and change direction based on what they find.

Once the product is live, you can see which groups are the most active users and how they interact with it. That data is what you use to tailor functionality to the people who actually show up.

Development Comes After the Approach

Now that the "why" is settled, it is time for the "how". Two things come before a single line of code:

Inspiration. Start analysing your idea as soon as it is born. The more questions you ask, the clearer your vision becomes.

Analysis. Look around and assess the situation honestly. How often does this problem appear? What is the current solution? Who is your target market? Who is your main rival?

What Framework Should You Establish First?

Bring the team together. Mutual support, honest criticism, and an open exchange of expertise matter most at this stage. A strong team is also one of the first things any fund looks for.

Build the MVP. Find developers who can deliver a high-quality technical solution. Gather your business and technical requirements and prioritise them before development starts.

A piece of personal advice: never assume a simple plan will be simple to implement. The more specific your information, the easier it is to stay disciplined and on track. An MVP is only the first stage of development for a startup.

What Happens After an MVP?

Keep an eye on the figures. The main principle of lean startup design is simple:

Build, measure, learn.

An MVP will not save you from learning difficult lessons along the way, but it can save your startup an enormous amount of time and effort. If you do pursue one, make sure your method is as unique as your company — and hold to a lean, ongoing process. Remember that Airbnb consisted of three air beds, two guys, and a wifi connection.

Your MVP is not the finished product. Perhaps it performed exceptionally well. Perhaps the users you released it to love it exactly as it is. It is still not finished. Don't let short-term success distract you or your team from the long-term goal — this stage teaches you a great deal, but it is a stepping stone to your final, fleshed-out product.

Takeaway: Take what you have learned and apply it to your ultimate goal. After the trial run, only remove features if doing so genuinely makes sense.

So — what are your thoughts on MVPs? If you are planning one, Codonnier Solutions can help you scope it, build it, and get it in front of real users.
